Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Era Guide: Sets, Cards, Rarities & Products

The Scarlet & Violet Series ran from March 2023 to July 2025 and reshaped the international Pokémon TCG in several visible ways: yellow card borders were replaced by silver, Pokémon ex returned, the rarity system was rebuilt around illustration rare and special illustration rare cards, and the era steadily added Tera Pokémon ex, Ancient and Future cards, ACE SPEC cards, Stellar Tera Pokémon ex and Trainer's Pokémon.

This guide covers all 16 international Scarlet & Violet expansions in release order. The card totals below are the exact final English checklist totals for each released set, including cards numbered above the main-set denominator and any separately numbered subset only where that subset is formally part of the expansion.

Scarlet & Violet era Pokémon TCG booster pack line-up

Scarlet & Violet changed substantially across its run, from the 2023 launch through Tera, Ancient/Future, ACE SPEC and Trainer’s Pokémon releases.

What defines the Scarlet & Violet Series?

Scarlet & Violet is best understood as a sequence of collecting and gameplay changes rather than one single mechanic. The launch changed the physical card presentation and rarity structure, while later expansions introduced Ancient/Future cards, ACE SPECs, Stellar Tera Pokémon ex and finally the return of Trainer's Pokémon.

Key mechanics and collecting changes

Change First major set What changed
Series launch Silver borders, Pokémon ex and a new rarity ladder Scarlet & Violet replaced international yellow borders with silver borders and formalised double rare, ultra rare, illustration rare, special illustration rare and hyper rare tiers.
Tera Pokémon ex Terastallized Pokémon ex become a recurring theme The era begins with Tera Pokémon ex and later expands into type-shifted Tera cards and the Stellar Tera treatment.
Ancient & Future Paradox Rift Ancient and Future labels become a dedicated card family with support that continues through later expansions.
ACE SPEC return Temporal Forces ACE SPEC Trainer and Special Energy cards return with the one-ACE-SPEC-per-deck rule.
Stellar Tera Stellar Crown Stellar Tera Pokémon ex arrive with multi-Energy gemstone attacks and a distinctive rainbow-crystal presentation.
Trainer's Pokémon Journey Together Named Trainer-and-Pokémon pairings return as a major set identity and continue into Destined Rivals.
Split international finale Black Bolt & White Flare The era ends with two separate international special expansions sharing one Unova-focused release programme.

Scarlet & Violet set-by-set guide

Open a set below for the collector-focused summary. The headline card count is exact; variants such as reverse holos, stamped promos or parallel patterns can make a true master set larger.

Scarlet & Violet — SVI · 31 March 2023 · 258 cards

The launch set establishes the visual and mechanical language of the era: silver borders internationally, Pokémon ex as the headline multi-Prize mechanic, Tera Pokémon ex and the new Scarlet & Violet rarity symbols. Koraidon ex and Miraidon ex anchor the Paldea theme.

Exact checklist: 258 cards (198 main + 60 above-set). For collectors, this is the starting point for illustration rare and special illustration rare cards in the modern international rarity system. Miriam, Gardevoir ex and the linked Ralts/Kirlia/Gardevoir artwork line are among the set's best-known illustration-driven cards.

Products: Normal main-expansion distribution: booster packs, displays, Elite Trainer Boxes, Build & Battle products and related collections.

Japanese source context: Scarlet ex / Violet ex; ex Starter Sets.

Paldea Evolved — PAL · 9 June 2023 · 279 cards

Paldea Evolved broadens the first set with the final evolutions of Sprigatito, Fuecoco and Quaxly as Pokémon ex, the four Treasures of Ruin and a much larger international card pool assembled from several Japanese releases.

Exact checklist: 279 cards (193 main + 86 above-set). Its 279-card checklist makes it one of the largest early Scarlet & Violet sets. The evolutionary illustration sequences and Iono special illustration rare are especially representative of the era's artwork-led collecting appeal.

Products: Normal main-expansion distribution with booster displays, ETBs, Build & Battle products and collections.

Japanese source context: Triplet Beat / Snow Hazard / Clay Burst; starter-deck material.

Obsidian Flames — OBF · 11 August 2023 · 230 cards

Obsidian Flames centres on Charizard ex and is the first international expansion to make type-shifted Tera Pokémon ex a major feature. Tyranitar, Eiscue and Vespiquen also appear with types that differ from their usual TCG typing.

Exact checklist: 230 cards (197 main + 33 above-set). The set is smaller than Paldea Evolved but heavily identified with its Charizard ex treatments, especially the special illustration rare. It is a good example of a set whose collector identity is much stronger than its raw card count suggests.

Products: Normal main-expansion distribution.

Japanese source context: Ruler of the Black Flame plus deck, promo and held-over material.

151 — MEW · 22 September 2023 · 207 cards

151 is the first Scarlet & Violet special expansion and deliberately limits the Pokémon roster to Generation I. The English checklist runs through the original 151 Pokémon in National Pokédex order before Trainer cards and above-set-number rarities.

Exact checklist: 207 cards (165 main + 42 above-set). The English set has 207 numbered cards. It should not be confused with the Japanese reverse-holo structure: the famous Japanese Master Ball reverse-holo pattern is not part of the normal English 151 checklist.

Products: Special expansion: boosters were distributed through products such as ETBs, Booster Bundles, Binder Collections, Poster Collections and other collection boxes rather than conventional booster displays.

Japanese source context: Pokémon Card 151.

English Pokémon 151 and Prismatic Evolutions products beside Japanese counterparts

English special expansions can be closely related to Japanese releases while still differing in checklist structure, parallels and product configuration.

Paradox Rift — PAR · 3 November 2023 · 266 cards

Paradox Rift introduces Ancient and Future cards as dedicated labels and builds the set around the time-displaced Pokémon connected to Area Zero. Roaring Moon ex and Iron Valiant ex are the clearest headline examples.

Exact checklist: 266 cards (182 main + 84 above-set). The 266-card checklist gives the expansion a broad mix of illustration rares, special illustration rares and Paradox-themed support. Ancient and Future labels also matter to players because later cards refer to those traits directly.

Products: Normal main-expansion distribution.

Japanese source context: Ancient Roar / Future Flash / Raging Surf plus Terastal starter sets.

Paldean Fates — PAF · 26 January 2024 · 245 cards

Paldean Fates is the shiny-focused special expansion of the era. It combines a compact 91-card main set with a very large above-number section built around more than 100 Shiny Pokémon and Shiny Pokémon ex.

Exact checklist: 245 cards (91 main + 154 above-set). The exact English checklist contains 245 cards, but a master set can become much larger once normal and parallel variants are considered. Shiny Pikachu and Shiny Tera Charizard ex are representative collector targets.

Products: Special expansion with boosters inside set-branded products rather than normal booster displays.

Japanese source context: Shiny Treasure ex plus held-over Scarlet & Violet-era cards.

Temporal Forces — TEF · 22 March 2024 · 218 cards

Temporal Forces expands the Ancient and Future theme and brings ACE SPEC cards back to the Pokémon TCG. Walking Wake, Gouging Fire and Raging Bolt sit opposite Iron Leaves, Iron Boulder and Iron Crown.

Exact checklist: 218 cards (162 main + 56 above-set). The ACE SPEC return is the set's clearest mechanical marker. Seven ACE SPEC cards appear in the expansion, alongside a substantial illustration-rare and special-illustration-rare section.

Products: Normal main-expansion distribution.

Japanese source context: Wild Force / Cyber Judge plus Starter Deck & Build Sets.

Twilight Masquerade — TWM · 24 May 2024 · 226 cards

Twilight Masquerade moves the focus to Kitakami from The Teal Mask DLC. Ogerpon appears across four Tera Pokémon ex forms, with Bloodmoon Ursaluna ex and other Kitakami characters supporting the theme.

Exact checklist: 226 cards (167 main + 59 above-set). The four Ogerpon masks give the set a strong binder identity, while Greninja ex and Carmine are among the best-known illustration-led cards. ACE SPEC cards continue from Temporal Forces.

Products: Normal main-expansion distribution.

Japanese source context: Transformation Mask / Crimson Haze.

Shrouded Fable — SFA · 2 August 2024 · 99 cards

Shrouded Fable is a compact special expansion centred on Pecharunt and the Loyal Three. Its 99-card total makes it one of the smallest numbered Scarlet & Violet releases.

Exact checklist: 99 cards (64 main + 35 above-set). Because the checklist is small, the illustration rares and special illustration rares form a large part of the collecting identity. The special-set format also means sealed-product availability differs from a normal booster expansion.

Products: Special expansion distributed through ETBs, collection products and later Booster Bundles rather than conventional booster displays.

Japanese source context: Night Wanderer plus selected cards from other Japanese products.

Stellar Crown — SCR · 13 September 2024 · 175 cards

Stellar Crown introduces Stellar Tera Pokémon ex. These cards keep the Pokémon's normal TCG type but use distinctive gemstone-named attacks that require multiple Energy types, with Terapagos ex as the headline card.

Exact checklist: 175 cards (142 main + 33 above-set). The 175-card checklist is relatively compact for a modern main set. Terapagos ex, Squirtle and Bulbasaur illustration rares give the expansion a clear collector identity beyond the new Stellar mechanic.

Products: Normal main-expansion distribution.

Japanese source context: Stellar Miracle plus Battle Academy Deck Kit cards.

Surging Sparks — SSP · 8 November 2024 · 252 cards

Surging Sparks expands the Stellar Tera mechanic and uses the Terarium from The Indigo Disk as a recurring setting. Pikachu ex is the headline card, joined by Alolan Exeggutor ex, Latias ex and Archaludon ex.

Exact checklist: 252 cards (191 main + 61 above-set). At 252 cards it is one of the era's larger main expansions. The Pikachu ex special illustration rare is the most recognisable card, but the set also contains 23 illustration rares and 11 special illustration rare Pokémon and Supporter cards.

Products: Normal main-expansion distribution.

Japanese source context: Super Electric Breaker / Paradise Dragona plus Stellar Tera starter sets.

Prismatic Evolutions — PRE · 17 January 2025 · 180 cards

Prismatic Evolutions is an Eevee-focused special expansion built around Stellar Tera Pokémon ex. It is also one of the era's most variant-heavy sets.

Exact checklist: 180 cards (131 main + 49 above-set). The exact numbered checklist is 180 cards. In addition, many regular cards can appear with standard reverse holo, Poké Ball and Master Ball background patterns, so a full master-set project is much larger than 180 slots.

Products: Special expansion with a long, staggered product rollout rather than a normal booster display release.

Japanese source context: Terastal Fest ex plus Generations Start Deck material.

Prismatic Evolutions and Japanese Terastal Fest ex Pokémon products

Prismatic Evolutions draws heavily from Terastal Fest ex, but the international release also uses additional source products and a different sealed-product structure.

Journey Together — JTG · 28 March 2025 · 190 cards

Journey Together brings Trainer's Pokémon back as a major named mechanic, with cards such as N's Zoroark ex, Iono's Bellibolt ex, Lillie's Clefairy ex and Hop's Zacian ex.

Exact checklist: 190 cards (159 main + 31 above-set). The set includes 190 numbered cards and returns a form of box topper through selected enhanced booster displays containing a stamped N's Reshiram illustration rare.

Products: Normal main expansion, but with both regular and selected enhanced booster display configurations in some markets.

Japanese source context: Battle Partners plus selected Generations Start Deck cards.

Destined Rivals — DRI · 30 May 2025 · 244 cards

Destined Rivals continues Trainer's Pokémon and makes Team Rocket the central opposing force. Giovanni's Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex sits alongside Cynthia's Garchomp ex, Ethan's Ho-Oh ex and other named Trainer partnerships.

Exact checklist: 244 cards (182 main + 62 above-set). The exact English checklist is 244 cards. More than 80 Team Rocket-related cards give the set a strong unified identity, while the large illustration section supports character-led collecting.

Products: Normal main-expansion distribution, with Rival Battle Decks previewing some cards before the full set launch.

Japanese source context: Glory of the Rocket Gang / Hot Wind Arena plus rival starter sets.

Black Bolt — BLK · 18 July 2025 · 172 cards

Black Bolt is one half of the first split international Pokémon TCG expansion. Together with White Flare it covers all 156 Pokémon originally discovered in Unova, while each half keeps its own exclusive booster packs and checklist.

Exact checklist: 172 cards (86 main + 86 above-set). Black Bolt contains exactly 172 numbered cards. Its 86-card main set is matched by 86 cards above the denominator. Poké Ball and Master Ball parallel patterns and the monochrome Black White rare treatment make the release unusually demanding for master-set collectors.

Products: Special expansion with its own ETB, Binder Collection and boosters; products often pair Black Bolt and White Flare but the packs are not interchangeable.

Japanese source context: Black Bolt / White Flare Japanese paired set with international redistribution.

White Flare — WHT · 18 July 2025 · 173 cards

White Flare is the companion half to Black Bolt. The two expansions share the Unova-wide concept but have distinct card lists and booster packs.

Exact checklist: 173 cards (86 main + 87 above-set). White Flare contains exactly 173 numbered cards: 86 cards in the main set and 87 above the denominator. Like Black Bolt, it uses Poké Ball and Master Ball parallel patterns and the Black White rare treatment.

Products: Special split-expansion distribution matching the Black Bolt product programme.

Japanese source context: Black Bolt / White Flare Japanese paired set with international redistribution.

Collecting the Scarlet & Violet era

Illustration rare and special illustration rare

Scarlet & Violet makes full-card artwork a core part of the rarity structure rather than an occasional alternate-art treatment. Illustration rares cover ordinary Pokémon; special illustration rares cover Pokémon ex and Supporters.

Hyper rare

Gold-etched hyper rares remain the top named rarity tier through most of the era, but a rarity label should not be treated as a guarantee of market value.

Shiny-focused releases

Paldean Fates turns shiny Pokémon into the main collecting theme, with a very large block of above-set-number shiny cards.

Parallel-pattern collecting

Prismatic Evolutions and Black Bolt / White Flare add Poké Ball and Master Ball patterned reverse-holo variants, creating much larger master-set possibilities than the numbered checklist alone suggests.

Black White rare

Black Bolt and White Flare introduce the monochrome Black White rare treatment at the end of the era.

Standard expansions vs special expansions

Standard Scarlet & Violet expansions use ordinary booster packs and 36-pack displays, normally alongside Elite Trainer Boxes, Build & Battle products and six-pack Booster Bundles. A Booster Bundle is mainly packs; an ETB adds sleeves, dice, markers and storage; a display is simply a larger fixed quantity of ordinary boosters.

The special expansions are 151, Paldean Fates, Shrouded Fable, Prismatic Evolutions, Black Bolt and White Flare. These distribute boosters through set-branded products instead of a conventional 36-pack display, so comparing them with a main expansion means comparing actual pack counts and included accessories rather than the box format.

For a collector who only wants packs, the pack-focused product is the cleaner comparison. For someone who also wants storage, sleeves or fixed promos, an ETB or collection product may be the more relevant format. That recommendation is based on contents, not assumed value or availability.

Store note: TCE stocks Scarlet & Violet-era Pokémon products; see our English Pokémon TCG range.

Playing these cards and Standard legality

Standard legality is based on regulation marks and current rotation rules, not simply the Scarlet & Violet logo. By the 2026 Standard format, earlier G-regulation cards from the first part of this era have rotated, while later H- and I-regulation cards may remain legal. Reprints can also affect whether an older physical printing of the same card can still be used.

How do the Japanese Scarlet & Violet sets match the international sets?

There is no single pattern. Some international expansions map closely to one Japanese set, while others combine paired boosters, subsets, decks or held-over cards. This era guide keeps those notes brief; the full set-by-set mapping is in our English and Japanese Pokémon set guide.

Frequently asked questions

How many Scarlet & Violet Pokémon TCG sets are there?

There are 16 international Scarlet & Violet expansions in this guide, from Scarlet & Violet through White Flare. Black Bolt and White Flare are counted separately because they are distinct international expansions with separate booster packs and checklists.

What is the biggest Scarlet & Violet set?

Paldea Evolved has 279 numbered English cards, making it the largest numbered set in this era. Variant-heavy special sets such as Prismatic Evolutions can require far more cards for a true master set once parallel patterns are included.

Which Scarlet & Violet sets are special expansions?

151, Paldean Fates, Shrouded Fable, Prismatic Evolutions, Black Bolt and White Flare use special-expansion distribution rather than the normal main-set booster-display model.

When did ACE SPEC cards return?

ACE SPEC cards returned in Temporal Forces in March 2024.

When did Trainer's Pokémon return?

Trainer's Pokémon returned as a major set mechanic in Journey Together and continued into Destined Rivals.

Are Black Bolt and White Flare one set or two?

Internationally they are two separate special expansions with their own packs and checklists. They form a paired finale to the Scarlet & Violet era.

Are Scarlet & Violet cards still Standard legal?

Not automatically. By the 2026 Standard format, earlier G-regulation Scarlet & Violet cards have rotated, while later H- and I-regulation cards may remain legal. Always check the regulation mark and current rotation rules rather than relying on the expansion name.

Where this comes from: Pokémon’s official expansion pages, product pages, checklists/card database and current Standard-format material, with Japanese source names cross-checked against Pokémon Card Game Japan and the detailed TCE set-mapping guide.

Last updated: 6 October 2026. Released-set card counts use final English checklist information; parallel variants can make a master set larger than the numbered checklist.
